A short break that works for you and your carer

Short Term Respite (STR) is a type of NDIS-funded support that gives people with disability time away from their usual care arrangements, while still receiving the support they need.

You might use STR to give your regular carers some respite, receive uninterupted supports or ensure supports with overnight stays. Whatever your reason, we will work with you to plan a short stay that meets your goals and suits your lifestyle.

What’s included in your STR experience?

Your STR support is designed around your goals, needs and daily routines. This may include:

  • Accommodation in an accessible or standard home
  • Support Workers to help with Daily Living and personal care
  • Meal planning and preparation
  • Transport options, including wheelchair-accessible vans
  • Activities in and around the community
  • Help with medication and health needs

No matter what your circumstances are, we will make sure your experience is safe, supported, and enjoyable.

Funding and eligibility

The NDIS may fund STR through your plan, either under Short Term Respite or as part of your Core Supports. If you need support for a longer period, such as while transitioning out of hospital or even looking for a temporary housing while your permanent home is being arranged, you may be eligible for Medium Term Accommodation (MTA), which covers up to 90 days.

Short Term Respite is for customers who live with their informal supports, or receive daily drop-in supports from them, or who receive disability-related supports from informal supports for 6 or more hours per day. Customers who do not live with their informal supports or do already have supports such as Supported Independent Living (SIL) typically do not qualify for STR. If you’re not sure where to start, we’ll help you understand your options and get the right support in place.

Frequently Asked Questions

Short Term Respite (STR)

Short Term Accommodation (STR) offers short stays and respite support, often for a few nights or weeks. Supported Independent Living (SIL) provides ongoing, Daily Living support in a more permanent home setting.

STR provides a safe space with trained staff for rest, routine support, or a short break from your usual living arrangement. It can also be used for trying new living options or building new skills.

No, STR can be used for planned short stays, transitions between services, or to give carers a break. It’s a flexible part of many NDIS plans.
