What to expect from our transport options

We will help you find the right travel solution and support you to build confidence along the way.

With Interchange WA’s transport options, you can:

  • Travel in one of our Wheelchair Accessible Vans (WAVs)
  • Ride with your Support Worker in a standard vehicle
  • Build skills to travel independently on public transport
  • Access community activities, events and appointments
  • Get support attending driving lessons, if eligible
  • Learn safe travel habits and route planning

Our WAVs are designed for safe and comfortable travel for people who use wheelchairs or need accessible features. Support Workers are trained in safe operation of lifts and secure transport procedures to ensure you have an enjoyable travel.

If you don’t need a modified vehicle, we can still get you where you need to go. Our trained Support workers can support you with everyday transport on their verified vehicles.

If one of your goals is to build independence and your capacity, we can help you get familiar with buses, trains or other public transport options. From route planning to on-the-go support, we will help you grow in confidence.

If you need your own vehicle modified, you may be eligible for NDIS funding under Assistive Technology. This can help with adaptations such as wheelchair lifts, restraint systems or driving controls. Our Support Workers can support you and accompany you through this transition.

Frequently Asked Questions

Disability Transport Services

The NDIS may fund transport assistance for people who can’t use public transport without difficulty. This can include mileage costs, travel with a Support Worker, or access to specialised vehicles – depending on your individual needs and goals.

Transport supports can be funded through your NDIS plan under:

  • Core Transport
  • Capacity Building Increased Independence (Support Category 9)

Assistive Technology for vehicle modifications (Support Category 5)

Yes, some participants use Core or Transport funding for wheelchair-accessible taxis or rideshares, but it depends on your plan and funding category. Keep records of trips and ensure the service aligns with your NDIS goals.

General transport funding covers your own travel costs (like taxis), while Support Worker-assisted travel includes a worker accompanying you to and from appointments, activities or work and their time is billed under support categories.

Your NDIS plan should reflect how often you leave home, how far you travel, and what supports you need to do that safely. If your transport needs change, you can request a plan reassessment or discuss options with your Support Coordinator.
