Twelve Years of Making a Difference – Meet Antony
“It makes me happy when I do something good for others.”
It’s a simple statement, but one that has guided Antony throughout his twelve years at Interchange WA. Since joining the organisation in May 2014, Antony has built a reputation as someone who consistently shows up for the people he supports. His commitment, compassion, and dedication are why he is our latest iThink You Are Awesome winner.
A Commitment to Making a Difference
For Antony, the most rewarding part of his role as a Support Worker in the Spearwood Neighbourhood is knowing he has made a positive difference in someone’s day.
Whether it’s helping a Customer achieve a goal, navigate a challenge, or simply feel supported, Antony finds genuine satisfaction in seeing people thrive.
When asked which of Interchange WA’s values resonates most with him, Antony doesn’t choose just one. Empowerment, Respect, Belonging, and Individuality all play an important role in how he supports Customers every day. “All four are equally important,” he says.
When It Mattered Most
Antony’s dedication was especially evident during a difficult situation involving a Customer who was experiencing a serious health issue.
Despite concerns from those around him and an ambulance being called, the Customer chose not to go to hospital. It was a challenging situation that required Antony to balance concern for the Customer’s wellbeing with respect for his right to make his own decisions. The following morning, Antony took the time to sit down with the Customer, listen to his concerns, and talk through the importance of seeking medical treatment.
His patience and persistence paid off.
After gaining the Customer’s trust, Antony drove him to the emergency department himself. The Customer was admitted to hospital, where he spent the next three weeks receiving life-saving treatment.
But Antony’s support didn’t stop there.
During the Customer’s hospital stay, Antony stayed connected by calling regularly and visiting on his rostered days, ensuring the Customer felt supported throughout his recovery.
More Than a Single Moment
Stories like this highlight why Antony is such a valued member of the Interchange WA team. While moments of crisis often stand out, it is Antony’s everyday actions, listening, supporting, building trust, and treating every Customer with respect, that truly make a difference.
That’s what being a great Interchanger is all about. Being there in the critical moments, then continuing to show up with the same care, compassion and consistency long after the crisis has passed. For twelve years, he has demonstrated what great support looks like: being there when it matters most and helping people feel empowered, valued, and heard.
