Champion for Disability Rights
Janine’s Relentless Fight for her customers
When the NDIS plans for Lucas and Christian—two brothers with Level 3 autism—were drastically reduced by nearly 70%, their world was turned upside down. Both boys require round-the-clock care, prompting for daily activities, and intensive behavioural support. Despite clear documentation in their Functional Assessment Reports, the cuts jeopardised their well-being and left their family in a state of crisis.
That’s when Janine stepped in as a true Champion for Disability Rights!
As a Support Coordinator with Interchange, Janine brings more than just expertise—she brings heart. Known for her calm, solutions-focused approach and unwavering belief in the people she supports, Janine has built a reputation for going above and beyond. This case was no different.
Although she had never worked on a tribunal case of this scale before, Janine took it upon herself to learn the ins and outs of the NDIS appeals process. She researched legislation, reached out to advocacy bodies, and guided the family through every step of what felt like an overwhelming maze. She didn’t just share information—she empowered them to take action.
Knowing the family was stretched thin—managing a small floral business while caring for their sons—Janine took on much of the heavy lifting. She personally liaised with a specialist advocacy organisation, compiled evidence, drafted responses, and coordinated communications. She became the steady, central support the family didn’t know they needed.
Lucas and Christian’s mother later shared how grateful she was—not just for the outcome, but for finally feeling seen and supported. For the first time in a long time, someone stood beside them, determined to make things right. Janine’s advocacy gave the family hope and space to breathe.
“Janine fought for us like it was her own family. She never gave up, even when we lost hope. Without her, we wouldn’t have stood a chance.” – Lucas and Christian’s Mother
Her tireless work paid off. The tribunal outcome restored over 70% of the boys’ funding—a critical win that means more access to behavioural therapy, increased hours of specialised support, and the continuity of care that both boys need to feel safe and thrive at home.
Janine worked late nights and weekends, knowing this case wouldn’t be billable. She just dint help but she stayed the course, because doing the right thing mattered more. Her commitment reflects what Interchange stands for walking alongside people with disability to remove barriers and build a more inclusive community.
